The Great Commission | No. 2

‘Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?’ And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’ [Matthew 22:36-40]

Coming back from a mission trip, I was convinced that missions was the ultimate goal in life – to preach the gospel to all nations so that the end will come, as is promised in Matthew 24. After talking with a friend about our different mission trips, he told me that the idea of a Christian going on mission trips is redundant, since the definition of being a Christian should be missions. Christian = missions. However, after a few weeks of discerning what my heart felt burdened to write about, I’ve seen how our calling is even simpler than that. The Great Commission | No. 1

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” [Matthew 28:18-20]

Go. Jesus’ last words to His disciples were surely important. He said all nations. Not even just nations as defined by us now, since these geographic lines have changed even in the past century; all nations means make disciples out of everyone in the world. Every single person in every single people group in every corner of the world. His command to “go” demands action – finding these people of all nations and preaching the gospel to them. We’re not all meant to be long-term missionaries, but I do think it’s worth going on one short-term mission just to see if maybe this is your calling.
