Since I started college, I keep hearing about someone named John Wooden (to all the basketball fans out there, I’m so sorry for being so uncultured). John Wooden was not only a legendary basketball coach, but also a Christian who clearly lived out what he believed. What stuck with me the most is him saying, “If I were ever prosecuted for my religion, I truly hope there would be enough evidence to convict me.” Imitating and learning from other Christians can help us to be more like Jesus Christ Himself. Below are some words of wisdom from our fellow brothers and sisters.
“Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.” [John Wooden]
John Wooden’s “7 Things To Do”
- Be true to yourself
- Make each day your masterpiece
- Help others
- Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible
- Make friendship a fine art
- Build a shelter against a rainy day
- Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day
Faith is personal, not private.
“I used to ask God to help me. Then I asked if I might help Him. I ended up by asking Him to do His work through me.” [Hudson Taylor]
Without God, we cannot. Without us, God will not.
“It’s not easy, but it’s simple.” [God’s Not Dead]
“Sometimes the devil allows people to live a life free of trouble because he doesn’t want them turning to God. Their sin is like a jail cell, except it is all nice and comfy and there doesn’t seem to be any reason to leave. The door is there, but wide open. Until one day, time runs out and the cell door slams shut. Suddenly, it’s too late.” [God’s Not Dead]
God’s work done God’s way will never lack God’s supply.
The higher you climb, the more you see. The more you see, the less you know. The less you know, the more you yearn. The more you yearn, the higher you climb.
“If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world.” [C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity]
“The callings of God never leave a man where they find him. For to stay where he is after God has called him to move on is itself a backward movement, though he takes no actual step.” [Billy Graham]
If you don’t stand up for something, you will fall for everything.
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” [C. S. Lewis]
